Wines from the Sea: this time we head to Tuscany, to the Argentario coast
Our Wines from the Sea blog this time takes us to Tuscany, right to the
heart of Monte Argentario, a stunning promontory stretching into the
Tyrrhenian Sea like a green jewel surrounded by blue waters. Argentario
is famous for its dreamy beaches, such as Cala del Gesso, Spiaggia
Lunga, and La Feniglia, as well as for its natural reserves like the
Riserva Duna Feniglia, where pine forests and sandy dunes meet the sea
to create postcard-perfect landscapes.
But beyond the sea and breathtaking scenery, this land hides an enological
treasure: Ansonica, an ancient grape variety that thrives in the
maritime breeze and Tuscan sunshine.
Ansonica: the white wine of the sea
Ansonica is a white grape variety that grows along the sunny coasts and sandy,
hilly soils of the Mediterranean. The wines it produces are typically
salty, aromatic with Mediterranean herbs, and marked by citrus notes,
almond hints, and a structure that makes them perfect for pairing with
seafood, shellfish, and Mediterranean cuisine.
In the Argentario area, Ansonica is the star of the Ansonica Costa
dell’Argentario DOC, and a few local producers have mastered the art of
crafting it with a blend of tradition and innovation.
Two producers to discover
1. Podere Santa Lucia Nestled
in the heart of Monte Argentario, Podere Santa Lucia cultivates
vineyards overlooking the sea, at over 300 meters above sea level, on
terraces surrounded by Mediterranean scrub. Among its labels stands out
Eroica, an Ansonica Costa dell’Argentario that ages in barrique for
eight months, giving the wine intense aromas, ripe fruit notes, and an
aromatic complexity rarely found in this grape. It’s an elegant,
structured version that combines maritime freshness with depth and
character.
2. Le Formiche
This winery offers a fresher, more contemporary interpretation of Ansonica.
Their Ansonica DOC Costa dell’Argentario ferments in stainless steel and
ages on fine lees, fully expressing the grape’s minerality, salty
character, and floral bouquet. It’s a wine that tastes of the sea,
perfect to enjoy young, ideally with a plate of freshly caught seafood.
A glass with a sea view
Visiting Argentario means discovering a corner of Tuscany where the sea meets
wild nature, and where in every glass you can taste the fragrance of the
Mediterranean scrub, the sea breeze, and the Mediterranean sunshine.
With the wines of Podere Santa Lucia and Le Formiche, Ansonica becomes the
ambassador of this territory: each sip tells the story of a land
suspended between sea, vineyards, and Tuscan tradition.
